Joe S. Hardine was born in 1961 in a windswept mountain town, where winters arrived early and stayed long. His father ran the local machine shop, a cavern of oil-stained concrete and humming lathes that smelled of metal shavings and diesel; his mother taught geography at the town’s only school, her classroom walls papered with maps of places neither of them would ever see. Young Joe grew up moving between these two worlds — the clang and precision of the shop floor, where broken things were coaxed back to life, and the quiet pull of his mother’s atlases, where his finger traced rivers and mountain ranges he promised himself he’d one day walk. Even as a boy, he seemed to understand that building things and leaving things were not opposites, but two halves of the same restlessness.
He studied mechanical engineering at university, drawn to the discipline’s promise of solving real problems with your own two hands. After that he left steady engineering jobs to chase expeditions: he crewed a sailboat across the Atlantic at twenty-four, spent eighteen months working on a bridge project in the Andes, and once trekked into the Kalahari with little more than a water still of his own design, testing an idea he’d sketched on a napkin.
By his forties, Hardine met his sweetheart, got married, and built a respected career as a field engineer, specializing in remote infrastructure — the kind of work that took him to oil platforms, mountain outposts, and disaster zones needing quick, durable solutions. He was known for an unusual habit: keeping a second notebook alongside his technical logs, where he wrote down the stories of the places and people he met.
It was a knee injury in his late fifties — the end of fieldwork — that pushed him toward writing in earnest. What began as personal notebooks became short stories, then novels. His fiction is known for its technical precision and its wealthy characters, who have some resemblance to his own character.
Now in his mid-sixties, Hardine lives a quieter life, though he still calls himself “retired only from moving heavy things.” He writes most mornings, walks in the afternoons, and occasionally consults on engineering projects when a problem catches his interest. He describes his writing as “the same work as engineering — you’re still trying to make something hold together, just out of words instead of steel.”
